Family Planning and Birth Control
Our office offers a wide range of contraceptive options. Whether you are not ready to have a baby, are in between pregnancies, are not sure if you have completed childbearing, or are completely done, we have options for you. Dr. Karmin and Dr. Dejean are knowledgeable about the differences in the vast numbers of birth control pills as well as the vaginal ring, and can help you find which one would be best for you with the fewest side effects.
We are experienced in all types of Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives including Nexplanon which is a progesterone only implant inserted into the upper arm and can stay in place for up to 3 years. It can be removed at any time should you want to become pregnant.
We offer 3 different IUDs including Paragard, Skyla, and Mirena. Paragard is a hormone free IUD which can stay in place for up to 10 years and can be removed at any time should you want to become pregnant. The Skyla and Mirena are progesterone containing IUDs which can stay in place for up to 3 and 5 years respectively, and are also useful for management of heavy and painful periods. Women who choose progesterone IUDs tend to have a significant reduction in the amount of bleeding experienced with menses. IUDs can also be removed at any time. Almost all women are eligible to receive an IUD including most women who have not yet had children.
If you are looking for something permanent, the Essure permanent birth control procedure may be right for you. This procedure involves placement of microinserts into the fallopian tubes to block them from the inside. The procedure is performed in the office, without general anesthesia and there are no hormones and no incisions. The procedure requires a follow up test in 3 months to ensure that the tubes are blocked before you can discontinue using an alternative form of birth control.
